Bailaho is celebrating its 15th anniversary. It is the perfect occasion to look back on a decade and a half shaped by technological progress, changing business habits and the evolution of a B2B company search engine that has followed its own path from the very beginning.
When Bailaho launched in 2011, the digital landscape looked very different from the one we know today. The internet had already become an established part of everyday life, but smartphones, tablets, social media, cloud solutions and connected devices had yet to become the constant companions they are now. For many businesses, a website was still primarily a digital business card, while most online research was carried out on desktop computers and laptops.
At the same time, the business world was entering a period of fundamental change. International business relationships were expanding, digital processes were becoming increasingly important, and the internet was evolving from a source of information into an essential tool for marketing, sales, procurement and business development.
Web 2.0, which introduced a much more interactive online experience, was still relatively young. Even the concept of Industry 4.0 was only beginning to gain momentum. It was during this transitional period that Bailaho was founded.
From the outset, Bailaho was backed by extensive industry experience. Its founders brought together around ten years of expertise in the development, operation, sales and marketing of directory media and B2B portals, alongside approximately 15 years of experience in web design and programming.
Their digital journey had begun long before Bailaho. Websites were already being created back in 1998 using platforms and software such as Tripod by Lycos, Microsoft FrontPage and Dreamweaver. At one point, Flash websites represented some of the most sophisticated work in web design. Today, most of these technologies belong to another era.
Bailaho therefore did not enter the market as an inexperienced internet start-up. The platform was built on an understanding of an industry that was already undergoing significant structural change.
The idea behind Bailaho was straightforward: businesses should be easier to find online, while companies searching for suppliers, service providers and business partners should be able to identify suitable providers more efficiently.
At the same time, businesses needed more than a simple directory listing. They needed a place where they could present themselves, their products and their services in greater detail.
This approach allowed Bailaho to go beyond the traditional concept of a company directory from the very beginning.
At the time, many business directories provided little more than basic company information: a logo, address, telephone and fax numbers, email address and a short description displayed within the search results.
Bailaho took the concept further.
Alongside the traditional search result, companies received a comprehensive business profile that effectively functioned as an independent landing page or mini-website. These profiles could also be accessed directly through search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Businesses were able to present their products and services in detail, format their content and integrate images and videos. The profiles were also designed with search engines in mind, including features such as meta titles, meta descriptions and friendly URLs.
As a result, a simple directory listing became an additional digital presence for the company.
Today, this may sound perfectly normal. In 2011, however, combining structured B2B search with individually designed company landing pages was far from standard practice.
Bailaho also offered another way to search for companies: a telephone-based business information service.
Free 0800 numbers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland allowed users to request assistance in finding suitable businesses. In Germany, Bailaho used the memorable vanity number 0800 BAILAHO – 0800 2 245 246.
An operator would receive the request, identify relevant companies and provide suitable recommendations. If requested, the enquiry could even be forwarded directly to one of the businesses.
This service made particular sense in 2011, when unlimited telephone plans were not yet as widespread as they are today and high telephone bills were still common. Freecall numbers therefore offered genuine value to users.
The basic concept of the Bailaho business information service still exists today – but it has evolved technologically and is now supported by artificial intelligence.
The same applies to “Search by Email.” Users could send an enquiry directly to Bailaho, which would then forward it to suitable companies. The principle remains in place today, now enhanced by AI technology.
Bailaho introduced several features at an early stage that were far from common among business directories at the time.
One example was its Bookmark & Share functionality, which allowed company profiles to be saved and shared across numerous online platforms and services.
Bailaho also recognised the growing importance of mobile internet usage early on.
A dedicated version of the platform, bailaho.mobi, was developed specifically for the mobile phones available at the time. This was particularly relevant because mobile internet connections were considerably slower and more expensive than they are today.
Long before responsive web design became an industry standard, Bailaho was already adapting to the growing importance of mobile devices.
By 2014, the platform had become fully responsive, allowing it to provide an optimised experience across different devices and screen sizes.
The second generation of Bailaho was designed around a rapidly changing device landscape.
Desktop computers and laptops were increasingly joined by smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other internet-enabled devices. Websites now had to function reliably across a wide range of screen sizes, in both portrait and landscape orientation.
Company profiles were expanded at the same time. Content could be presented in a modular format using widgets, while an integrated map feature made it possible to search for businesses by region and within a defined radius.
Step by step, Bailaho evolved from a conventional company search platform into a more comprehensive digital research tool for the B2B market.
The way businesses researched and purchased products and services was changing as well.
Companies increasingly turned to the internet to identify products, services and potential suppliers. Search engines, digital platforms and online business directories became more important throughout the procurement process.
The journey from initial research to enquiry and quotation became faster and increasingly digital.
This also changed one of the most important questions businesses had to ask themselves.
It was no longer simply:
“How can people find us if they already know our company name?”
The more important question became:
“How can potential customers find us when they need what we offer but do not yet know our company?”
Digital visibility therefore became an increasingly important element of successful B2B business development.
From the mid-2010s onwards, the internet increasingly moved away from the traditional desktop environment and into people's pockets.
Smartphones became a mass-market phenomenon. Accessing the internet was no longer an activity primarily associated with sitting at a desk – it became available virtually everywhere and at any time.
At the same time, Google became one of the most important gateways to online visibility for businesses.
Search engine optimisation developed from a specialist discipline into a strategic marketing instrument and eventually became an established sector of digital marketing in its own right.
The directory media industry also underwent major changes. New platforms appeared, others disappeared, and established directories changed ownership or moved away from their original positioning.
Throughout these changes, Bailaho remained committed to one fundamental principle: a business directory should not simply exist to supply results to Google. It should provide genuine value as an independent B2B platform.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought another major transformation to the business world in 2020.
Trade fairs, business travel and face-to-face meetings suddenly became severely restricted. Companies had to move communication, sales and collaboration into digital environments within a very short period of time.
At the same time, disrupted supply chains and shortages of essential components highlighted the importance of having access to alternative suppliers and sources of procurement.
For many companies, digital business search became an indispensable part of everyday operations.
Bailaho's approach has received recognition through a number of awards over the years.
These include Best of and second place at the Innovationspreis-IT, Best of at the Industriepreis, the main award and further distinctions within the Mittelstandsprogramm, finalist status at the European Business Awards, as well as recognition as “Best B2B-Platform” at the German Business Awards.
Industry involvement has also been part of Bailaho's activities from the beginning.
As a member of the VDAV – Verband Deutscher Auskunfts- und Verzeichnismedien e.V. and the Swiss SADV – Schweizer Adressbuch- und Datenbankverlegerverband, Bailaho has been involved in supporting reputable business practices within the directory media sector and, through its memberships, the efforts against questionable operators in the industry.
Following an assessment, the SADV awarded Bailaho the quality seal “Garantiert seriöses Verzeichnis” – confirming it as a reputable directory.
In an industry that has repeatedly faced challenges involving questionable business models, transparency has remained an important part of Bailaho's corporate philosophy.
Bailaho also chose a different approach when it came to pricing.
From the beginning, the basic listing – including the company profile and landing page – was offered for a one-time payment based on the principle:
“Pay once, stay listed permanently.”
Optional advertising services may have a defined term, but they do not renew automatically. Once the agreed period ends, the advertising service simply expires.
Customers therefore do not enter into an automatically renewing subscription. There is no automatic extension and consequently no cancellation period required to prevent a renewal.
This pricing structure remains one of Bailaho's distinctive characteristics.
Bailaho has never been limited to a single national market.
Bailaho.de, Bailaho.at and Bailaho.ch cover the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
With Bailaho.com, the concept has expanded internationally. Businesses can be presented globally and in multiple languages, covering 50 languages and more than 180 countries.
This enables Bailaho to support companies looking to reach new target groups and explore additional markets – particularly when opportunities for growth in their domestic market become limited.
Artificial intelligence has also become an integral part of various areas within the company.
In addition to traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Bailaho now incorporates Generative AI Optimization (GAIO) – optimisation designed to improve visibility and relevance within generative artificial intelligence systems.
Despite all these technological developments, the fundamental idea behind Bailaho has remained unchanged since 2011:
Bringing businesses together.
In a way, Bailaho can be compared to a dating platform – only for the business world.
So that in B2B, too, the result can be:
“It's a Match!”
In 2018, another brand was added: SEObest.
The idea grew directly from the needs of Bailaho customers. Companies increasingly required professional websites, search-engine-optimised landing pages and SEO services alongside their presence on Bailaho.
What began as additional customer demand eventually developed into an independent business division.
SEObest focuses particularly on companies operating within industry and industry-related sectors, providing services in web design, website development, SEO and, more recently, Generative AI Optimization (GAIO).
The objective extends far beyond creating an attractive website.
A professional website needs to be technically up to date, responsive, search-engine friendly and legally compliant. At the same time, it should reach the right target audiences, generate qualified enquiries and ensure a professional external presence.
Today, up to 200 websites per year are created, optimised or managed.
International projects have also become part of everyday business. Websites are developed in languages including English, French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish, as well as Scandinavian languages – and even Chinese, Russian and Arabic.
Fifteen years of Bailaho ultimately represent 15 years of continuous change.
From desktop computers to smartphones.
From static websites to interactive platforms.
From traditional company directories to digital B2B research tools.
From human operators to AI-supported solutions.
And the journey is far from over.
The goals for the coming years are clear: bring more companies onto Bailaho, further expand international sales activities and integrate new technologies wherever they provide meaningful value.
No matter how technology and markets evolve, the original purpose remains the same.
Bailaho wants to connect businesses.
Companies should be able to present themselves professionally online while gaining an additional channel through Bailaho to improve their visibility and discoverability among potential customers and business partners.
Perhaps the comparison with a dating platform is not so far-fetched after all.
At Bailaho, however, the goal is not to find the love of your life.
It is about finding the right business partner.
It’s a Match!
Here’s to the next 15 years of Bailaho!
